I joined the "Bluegrass Okies" in about 1970. Revival of Bluegrass music was sweeping the nation thanks to the movie "Bonnie & Clyde". I had just started playing the banjo, thank God there were not enough mediocre banjo pickers to go around or I might never have been asked to join the band. We started out playing at the newly formed "Oklahoma Bluegrass Club" shows and began to get a few local bookings. The core personnel of the band was; Jack Jarman; fiddle & bass vocals, Virgil Gifford; guitar and lead vocals; Joe Schat; mandolin; high tenor vocals, Dale White;bass, and bass vocals, Roy Barnes; banjo, barritone vocals. We had a couple of other people who played with us during the four years or so that we played as a full time "part time" band. Joe Story played lead guitar for a while and after he left the band Bob Cline joined on the dobro until the group disbanded in about 1975. In 1972 we played a show at the University of Oklahoma where we were "discovered" by a newly formed record company, we were approached as were a couple of other bands who played that show and offered a "record deal"on the ARTCO label. The scope of this deal was 3 records in 3 years, well long story short, we recorded 1 record as did the other bands and the company picked up their marbles as skipped out. But we did come away with a good album with no out of pocket expense for studio time and etc.so all's well that ends well. We remained friends after we disbanded and all went on to play music, sometimes a couple of us would end up in groups together. I must say some of the best times I have ever had playing music was during those few years, I also must say some of the best friends I have ever had were those great people who made up the "Bluegrass Okies". We have said farewell to Jack Jarman, Joe Story and Bobby Cline all three passing on much too young, I miss them but I have some wonderful memories of them.
